Spavinaw, OK - Quenton Gay Grider, 81, died Wednesday evening, December 27, 2006 at St. Francis Hospital, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gay was born July 14, 1925 at Eva, Oklahoma to James Herbert Grider and Stella Irene (Perry) Grider. He grew up in the Guymon area, leaving after his junior year of high school to join the U.S. Navy in 1942. Gay served aboard the USS Philadelphia, a light cruiser that provided naval gun support at Normandy. Upon his return from military service, Gay worked in the oil fields before moving to the Jay, Oklahoma area in 1959. He began working for the City of Tulsa in 1961 and retired in 1992. Among his positions that he held with the City of Tulsa, was that of supervisor of the Lake Eucha Water Treatment Plant. Gay married Tawanda Shipman on April 27, 1992 at Miami, Oklahoma. The couple made their home in the Spavinaw area. Mr. Grider had been a member of the United Methodist Church of Jay and more recently, a member of the First Christian Church of Langley, Oklahoma. He was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association. Gay raised quarter horses and loved horse racing. After retirement, he enjoyed intricate woodworking, making cradles, rocking horses, butcher block tables and other beautiful pieces. Survivors are his wife, Tawanda, of the home; one son, Joe Grider and his wife, Robbe of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a daughter, Valda Gay Scoufos and her husband, Harry of Lake Tenkiller, Oklahoma; four step-children, Beverly Wolsey and her husband, Ron of San Angelo, Texas, Theresa Muhlenkamp and her husband, Rex of Rogers, Arkansas, Cheryl Smith of Joplin, Missouri and Jacqueline Lais and her husband, Randolph of Rogers, Arkansas; one brother, Kenneth Grider of Altus, Oklahoma; a sister, Exie Hayes and her husband, Charlie of Guymon, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and by a sister, Vynneth Henderson. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 2, 2007 at the First Christian Church of Langley with Pastor Joel Rutherford officiating. Interment will follow in the Spavinaw/Strang Cemetery, under the direction of Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Jay, Oklahoma. Military graveside rites will be presented by the Grove Veteran Ritual Team. The family suggests that friends who wish may donate to the First Christian Church of Langley.
