Richard Franklin Spohn, son of Charles Robert and Mattie Sue Spohn, grandson of Frederick and Mary Spohn and Dr. and Mrs. W.A Day. When the "Big" war started, Dick fudged on his age and joined the Navy where he served 23 years. With constant advancement during that time serving as Meteorologist and other positions, ended with rating of Chief Petty Officer. Different tours of duty including Hawaii, Iwo Jima, where he went inland two days after the bomb, being exposed to radiation. Upon retirement from service for his country he returned to his home in Oklahoma to serve his Native American Country by teaching Silversmith, Leather Craft, CPR, etc. Richard decided the Cherokee should have their own stone, not a copy of other tribes. Richard's searched for alternate stone didn't take him far farm home. All he had to do was walk around his 40 acre farm in Eucha, Oklahoma. He found that most the readily available and desirable stone, when cut and polished, was the common flint rock, which he later named the "Oochalata Stone" in honor of Chief Oochalata who was Principal Chief of the Cherokees from 1875 to 1879. An exhibit of the stone and silver may be found where he and Mary were honored, presenting the gift at the Smithsonian Institute. When his work years were done, he went to be with the Lord on January 24, 2008 at his home in Eucha, Oklahoma surrounded by daughters Marsha Feedback, Sandi Beckton, Sister Dorothy Shepard, Granddaughter Ronny and her husband James Stoddard, Grandson Michael Spohn, Brother-in-law Bobby Wilson and friend Adam Stoddard, and Great Granddaughter Cheyenne Pickering, and the most wonderful, caring Rendy Erickson, RN of Hospice.
