Ruth Scott

Ruth Myers Scott passed away December 20, 2009, in Claremore, OK. She was born March 28, 1916, to Stella and Frank Myers in Childers, OK, grew up in the Childers area in rural Nowata County and graduated from Childers High School. She married Loyd Urvin (Scotty) Scott. They made their home in the Nowata and Delaware communities, while raising their children, Jane, Ronald and Tom. During this time the family attended the Nowata Methodist Church, where Ruth and Scotty served as youth sponsors for 13 years. While Scotty worked in the Nowata County oil fields, Ruth was a homemaker, dedicated mother and wife. In 1963 Scotty began working for Cal-Tex Petroleum and Ruth and Scotty began an eight-year tour of duty in Sumatra, Indonesia. While in Indonesia, Ruth organized and taught Kindergarten Classes for ex-patriot and native children. She and Scotty helped to build and support a church in the jungle for native Christians, who called the church "Ruth". In the early seventies, Ruth and Scotty moved to Tulsa. They were active members of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church and the New Covenant Sunday School Class. Ruth was active in United Methodist Women and loved to attend church and Sunday school. She was an excellent cook and loved to host and serve family meals. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren enjoyed visits and family gatherings at Grandma Scott's house. Her rhubarb-strawberry cobbler was legendary in the family and also as a treat at the annual New Covenant ice cream social. Family members surviving are daughter Jane Harp and her husband Milford of Claremore, son Ron Scott and his wife Sally of Claremore, and son Tom of Tulsa; a sister, Mildred Morgan of Orange, TX; grandchildren Cindy Harp Lytle, Cheryl Harp Matzke, Brenda Scott Clark, Debra Scott Randall, Clayton Scott, Dawn Scott Martinez, Krystal Scott; thirteen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Gladys Crawford and Thelma Gibson, and brothers Jasper, Clarence and Lawrence Myers. The Memorial Service will be in the Rose Chapel of Boston Avenue United Methodist Church at 11:00 a. m., Wednesday, December 23. Interment will be at 2:00 p. m. December 23 at the Martin Cemetery in rural Nowata County. Viewing will be from 8 a. m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, December 22 at the Benjamin Funeral Home in Nowata, OK. Memorial contributions can be made to the Mission Fund, Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, 1301 South Boston Avenue, Tulsa, OK, 74119.
