Sarah Alexander (Cooley) Cottle, 86-year-old Bartlesville resident, passed away on Monday, July 26, 2010 at the Heritage Villa Nursing Center. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sneed Chapel in the First United Methodist Church in Bartlesville with the Reverend Connie Taylor officiating. A private family committal service will be held later that day at the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church, 500 S. Johnstone, Bartlesville, OK 74003, or to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Sarah Alexander Cooley was born September 2, 1923 in Memphis, Tennessee to Cyrus Eugene Cooley, Sr. and Mary Lois (Matthews) Cooley, the second of three children. She was raised and educated in Memphis, graduating as an honor student from the Central High School Class of 1941. She then attended the Texas State College for Women (now Texas Woman's University) in Denton, Texas. She married John Ernest Cottle, Sr. on June 4, 1944 at the Little Chapel in the Woods on the college campus. She graduated with the Class of 1946 having earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Moving to Bartlesville in 1951, she and her husband raised four children and lived here the rest of their lives. Mr. Cottle preceded her in death in 2008, after 64 years of marriage. Mrs. Cottle was an active member of First United Methodist Church and served as a Children's Sunday School teacher. She was an active member of the United Methodist Women and the 20th Century Sunday School class. After her children were grown, she was a lead teacher at the Bellringer School in Bartlesville for area preschool children with special needs. Mrs. Cottle was a member of the Bartlesville Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member and officer of the Tuesday Club. In retirement, she and her husband enjoyed world travel and attending local musical and cultural events. She spent extensive time researching her genealogy, authoring two family history books titled "With Pen In Hand" and "The Ground Plows Delightful". Those left behind to cherish her memory are her three sons, Dr. John E. Cottle, Jr. D.O. and his wife Betty of Mendocino, California, Dr. Charles E. Cottle II M.D. and his wife Patti of San Antonio, Texas, and James B. Cottle and his wife Val of Bartlesville; her brother Charles M. Cooley of Somerville, Tennessee; her 6 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, her husband, and her daughter Mary Lois Cottle.
