Sherman Fields

November 15, 1919 — July 11, 2011

Sherman Eldo Fields, 91 was born on a farm east of Grove, Oklahoma, in November 1919 to Arthur Earl Fields and Ora E. (Hopkins) Fields. He left northeast Oklahoma during World War II, to work at Boeing Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas. There he met and married Geneva L. Copeland in March of 1943. They remained in Wichita until the end of the war, and then moved back to the Grove area. After the birth of 2 sons, Richard ‘Scott' and Jeffrey, in 1946 and 1949, they returned to Wichita where he went to work again at Boeing. Soon after the birth of their 3rd son, Steven, in 1951, he began his lifelong career as a licensed plumber in Wichita. After a wonderful 33 years marriage his wife Geneva, passed away in Jan 1979. Shortly after, he retired and returned again to Grove. He became reacquainted with Byrda Hendren Miller from Highland, CA, whom he had known in his childhood. They were married in Feb. 1982 and remained in Grove. They happily shared their life together for 20 years until her passing in Feb 2002. He was always proud of the Fields family's Cherokee heritage and spoke of it often in reliving stories in his long life. He recently enjoyed a surprise 90th birthday party with family and friends. He was a long time member of the Butler Baptist Church in Jay, OK. He also was a proud member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union for over 50 years. He will be remembered by many for always one to lend a skilled helping hand. Preceding him in death, Father, Arthur E. Fields, Mother, Ora E. Fields, Stepmother, Beulah Fields, Sister Bertha Fields Teel, Brother, James Fields, Wife, Geneva L. Fields, Wife, Byrda F. Fields. Surviving him in death, are sons Scott (Shirley) Fields of Maumelle, AR, Jeff (Linda) Fields of Derby, KS, Steve (Pattee) Fields of Augusta, KS, stepdaughter Janet (Allen) Feary of St. George, UT, sister Leta Harrison of Grove, plus 6 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; additionally, nephews, nieces, many other family members. Funeral services for Mr. Fields will be 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 16, 2011 at the Butler Baptist Church in Grove with Pastor Charlie Smith officiating. Interment will follow at the Fields Cemetery under the direction of the Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home of Grove.
