Luginbuel Funeral Home, Vinita, OK (918) 256-5555......Sylvester Charles Spurgeon, 84, of Vinita, passed away at Saint Francis Hospital, in Tulsa, on December 28, 2018. He was born August 12, 1934 in Hulbert, Oklahoma to Benjamin and Pearl Jessie (Hensley) Spurgeon. He attended school in Vinita and on August 21, 1951 Sylvester joined the United States Navy serving in Korea and China. He worked in the Copper Mines in Arizona for many years and returned to Vinita in the late 1990's. He worked at the Northeast Oklahoma Correctional Center in Vinita until his retirement. Sylvester was a member of the Vinita Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed playing softball, shooting pool, playing dominos, and playing cards at the Senior Citizens Center. Sylvester was always available to lend a helping hand to anyone, was a loving and caring man, and was a very good preacher. He was very particular about his hair and was always combing it. He had a great sense of humor and loved being a grandfather. Sylvester will be missed by all who knew him.
Preceding Mr. Spurgeon in death are his parents, Benjamin and Pearl Spurgeon; and his siblings Lloyd Spurgeon, Orville Spurgeon, and Clella Bigley.
Survivors include his children Charles Michael Spurgeon of California, Danny Wayne Spurgeon and wife Rosie of Arizona, Benny Joe Spurgeon of Vinita, Connie Yvonne Ramos of Arizona, Brenda Kay Torres of Arizona; a sister, Wallice Spurgeon of Grand Lake; twenty-six grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; many other relatives and a host of friends.
