Benjamin Funeral Service ~ Nowata, Oklahoma............Funeral services for Sylvia Lee Landes are 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the First Church of God in Nowata with Pastor Wendell Abbott officiating, under the direction of Benjamin Funeral Service. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Talala between her Mother & Husband. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com. Sylvia was born August 30, 1937 at their farm home East of Talala to Robert T. Mabry & Freeda E (Green) Mabry. She died at 6:50 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at her home in Nowata in her daughter's arms. After her father's death in 1943, Freeda and her three children moved to Nowata. As a young teen, Sylvia enjoyed visiting elderly women in the area. She attended Nowata Schools, graduating with the class of 1956. She organized their class reunions for many years & looked forward to the All School Reunions. On August 30, 1956, Sylvia married the love of her life, Marion J. Landes. Sylvia grew up in the Nazarene Church but after her marriage she attended The First Church of God with her husband. She held many positions in the church: Sunday School Teacher, Bible School Director, President of the Women's Missionary Society, served on the Benevolence Committee and was church treasurer for over 20 years. She continued visiting the shut-ins; taking them flowers and her famous Seven Layer Cookies. Sylvia worked at The First National Bank in Bartlesville, The First National Bank in Birmingham, Alabama and The First National Bank in Nowata, retiring from there in 1993. Sylvia & Marion volunteered for Elder Care and the Nowata Historical Museum. They also enjoyed traveling with her sister and brother-in-law, June & J.E. Hagebusch. They often spent time in Branson with Marion's brother & sister-in-law, Kenneth & Drew Landes. Sylvia & Marion were members of the Bears Den Resort & Pelican Landing Resort, so they frequently spent time at Grand Lake as well as traveling to various other states. The most exciting trip was when their children & other relatives traveled to Florida in celebration of Sylvia & Marion's 50th Anniversary. Sylvia took pride in her yard. She enjoyed working in her flower beds in the spring and raking the leaves in the fall. She was continually trimming around the flower beds and house. No, she didn't use a weed eater, she used an old pair of scissors. Sylvia & Marion were host to many Family Reunions and anniversary parties. They worked well together on anything they planned. The kids most remember their system to making deviled eggs. They had it down to an art! They also attended many 50th Anniversary Parties and traveled as far as Ohio for a celebration. Sylvia & Marion have two children, Cindy & Randy which they dedicated to the Lord soon after their births. They really enjoyed playing with them & going to all of their church & school activities. Sylvia & Marion were in church with their children and always had them in special programs and Vacation Bible School. Cindy was in Speech Club & Sylvia spent many Saturdays going to Speech Contests; she loved being with Cindy and her friends. Randy played all kinds of sports and Sylvia was always there to root for him and his friends. Then came the grandchildren & great grandchildren and "Great-Momma" (as she was named by Garrett, her oldest great-grandchild) also enjoyed attending their activities. After Marion's death in 2008, Sylvia spent most of the summer months at the lake. She learned to play pool, would play cards in the evenings and took long walks around the lake taking pictures of the beautiful sunsets. She enjoyed shopping, sightseeing trips and flea markets. In the evening, a campfire was a necessity, regardless of the temperature, to build the s'mores that she loved. During the winter months, Sylvia would always have a jigsaw puzzle on the table and a Word Search Book by her chair. She loved both and Cindy never let her run out of either. Sylvia was also a collector of Lighthouses and John Deere memorabilia. She loved her family, her church family & many other friends and treasured each one of you. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Cindy & son-in-law Kent Kuehler, son, Randy Landes, four grandsons, Bryan (Billie) Kuehler, Colby (Samantha) Kuehler, Travis (Heather) Kuehler, and Ricky ( Erica) Landes; four great-grandsons, Garrett & Wyatt Kuehler, Ashton & Preston Landes. Brother, Howell Mabry, brother-in-law, J. E. Hagebusch, half-sister, Emma Harris, brothers- in-law, Vernon (Una Belle) Landes, Kenneth (Drue) Landes, sisters-in-law, Martelle Hemphill and Waldeen (Percy) Harper, several cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends, Gene & Earlene Henry, Bill & Becky Price of Nowata and John & Helen Eubanks of Tulsa. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Marion Landes, her parents, Robert Mabry & Freeda Rose, a sister, June Hagebusch, and a granddaughter, Jaymie Kuehler. I (Sylvia) wrote my own Obituary after I found out I had a brain tumor that was Melanoma, as well as spots on each lung, kidneys and liver. Your life can change in a second so please be ready to meet our maker. I hope to meet all of you in Heaven!!!
