Velma Anderson

Velma Marie Anderson, age 95, a resident of Bartlesville died Friday June 29, 2007 in Heritage Villa Care Center in Bartlesville. Velma was born April 18, 1912 in rural Wilson County Kansas to Arthur A. Anderson and Media McWilliams Anderson. She grew up in the rural Wilson County, and Neosho County, Kansas areas and graduated from Chanute High School in 1931. She received her teaching certificate after graduation from high school and began a 46-year teaching career. Her teaching career began in a rural, one-room school in Allen County, Kansas. She taught in several rural schools in the Allen and Neosho County areas before becoming an elementary principal at Roosevelt School in Chanute Kansas. In 1958 she moved to Wichita, Kansas where she taught until retirement in 1977. During her summer vacations from teaching Velma attended Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg, Kansas. In 1950 she received her Bachelors Degree in Education and in 1954 she received her Masters in Education, also from Kansas State Teachers College. Velma moved to Bartlesville after her retirement in 1977 to care for her sister. She was a resident of Green Country Village, and member of the First Christian Church, Jubilee Quilters, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Miss Anderson is survived by one brother, Lowry F. Anderson of Lawrence, Kansas, many nieces and nephews and other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Dale Arthur Anderson, three sisters, Lillian M. Timmons, Cecil Benton and Nona Curtice. Funeral services will be held Tuesday July 3, 2007 at the First Christian Church in Bartlesville at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Gary L. Hagan officiating. Interment will follow on the family plot at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville. Miss Anderson will lie in state at Neekamp -Luginbuel Funeral home on Sunday afternoon and Monday with visitation on Monday evening from 7:00 till 8:00 p.m. Online condolences may be left at www.honoringmemories.com.
