Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home, Grove, Oklahoma 918-786-2261. Verdia "Pete" Brower, 89, passed away August 17, 2017 surrounded by her family and dear friends, in Grove, OK. Pete was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and very dear friend to all who knew her. "Pete", as she was known to most, was born in Elk City, Oklahoma on June 16, 1928 and attended college at Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, OK. She married Warren G. Brower in 1966, and worked as a bookkeeper in the construction/building materials fields in Oklahoma City and Grove for most of her life. Pete was a 40-year resident of Grove, where she was an active member of the community serving as President of the Grove PTA; Director on the Board of the Eastern Oklahoma District Library System; Secretary for the Grove Chamber of Commerce (named Woman of the Year); Leader of the Grand Lake Business and Professional Women's (BPW) organization; President of the Republican Women's Group; and was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Grove, where she was Treasurer for seven years, and a regular choir member for over 20 years. Pete loved all creatures, especially dogs, and was most proud of her volunteer work with the Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake (now known as Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake.) As the first president of the Humane Society in 1984, Pete helped obtain its tax exempt status, was active with spay and neuter programs, and continued to fund-raise so the organization could continue to be a "no kill rescue." By the time she retired, Pete helped save over 5,000 animals. Pete will also be remembered for her spitfire personality, "Take charge" attitude and being genuine to a fault. She had a passion for all types of sports, from her son's Little League team in the 70's, to golfing with her girlfriends in the 80s, to her continued love and cheering of the Braves, Cubs and Bronco's. Pete will also be remembered for her passion for shoes and hats. She never met a Size 6 shoe that she didn't like (she had a very large shoe collection) and was well known for wearing one of her 70+ hats. Additionally, Pete never sugar coated anything - especially her struggles in the kitchen and was often heard several doors down the street when trying to prepare a holiday meal. Pete was proud to be a Breast Cancer survivor, and truly treasured extra time with her friends and neighbors. She enjoyed flea markets and consignment store shopping with her dear friend Pat, and could also be found at home, either sitting on her deck with her dog, Maggie, or tending to Warren's tomato plants. Pete loved her family more than anything, and is survived by her husband of 50 years, Warren Brower, and her son, Charles D. Brower and wife Wendy Miles, of Dallas, TX. . She will be remembered fondly by her step-children: Elizabeth Brower of Atoka, OK, Darrell Brower and wife Susan of Oklahoma City, David Brower and wife Lena of Oklahoma City, Linda Brandt and husband Ronnie of Alabama along with many grand children, and other dear friends and neighbors. Her devoted mother and father, Jack (George H.) and Retha Ross Conner of Midwest City, and her brother, Robert Conner, of Petaluma, CA, preceded Pete in death. Pete will continue to be a source of inspiration to us all for years to come. Her dedication and generous spirit is her legacy. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Second Chance Pet Rescue of Grand Lake. http://doitforthedogs.com A visitation will be held from 5-7 PM, Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at Worley-Luginbuel Funeral Home.
