Vernon Keith McLain Sr, a well known and well respected local rancher passed away early Monday morning, August 16, 2010 at his residence south of Bluejacket with his family by his side. Keith was born in Demmit, TX on June 2, 1944, the son of Ewell and Berniece McLain. He was raised and educated in House, New Mexico and graduated from House High School in 1962. On March 11, 1970 he was united in marriage to Paula Birth in Coffeville, KS. When Keith met Paula he was a meat cutter at Carters in Wagoner. He worked at Leon's Coal Company for a few years, and for Neill's Cattle Company 25 years. Keith was also a big fan of the rodeo and participated in team roping. He was very knowledgeable in the horse and cattle business. People admired his work and he was the first to be called when a day worker was needed. He has been described as soft-spoken, gentle, a mentor, listener, and a friend. He will be deeply missed by many. Survivors include his wife Paula of the home, one son Keith McLain, Jr and wife Tara of Welch, one daughter Barbara Cook and husband Jeff of Pryor and three grandchildren: Kaylie Cook, Chase Cook, and Sage "Hootie" Cannaday McLain, siblings: Yetta Dunlap and husband Jerry of Clovis, NM, Robbie Henry and Husband Randy of Bluejacket, Neal and wife Alice of Throckmorton, TX, Justin McLain and wife Jammie of Bluejacket, and Pattie Bluejacket and husband Morris "Blue" of Bluejacket, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He is preceded in death by his parents Jack and Berneice McLain and infant twin grandchildren Layton and Lakin McLain. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Luginbuel Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the Trinity Baptist Church with Pastor Bill Lee officiating. Services are under the direction of Luginbuel Funeral Home.
