ARNOLD MOORE & NEEKAMP FUNERAL HOME, BARTLESVILLE, OK - Virginia Ellen Shutt , 84, long-time Bartlesville, Okla., resident, passed from this earthly life to her eternal home on December 25, 2015. She was born in Winfield, Ks., to Daniel Merle and Veryl Archer Rowe on March 16, 1931. She graduated from Winfield High School in 1949. Virginia married Melvin Spencer Shutt on Nov. 9, 1950, in Winfield. The couple moved from Wichita, Ks., to Bartlesville in 1956 when Melvin took a job at Phillips Petroleum Co. Virginia and Melvin had a loving, fun and wonderful marriage of 65 years. They enjoyed many memorable trips, both across the U.S. and abroad, antiquing, trips and visits with friends, and most of all, being with family. Virginia enjoyed most of Melvin's many jokes, working jigsaw puzzles and she marveled her family with her detailed memory. Virginia was a loving, giving (and quite often, worrying) mother to three children. She was always there for her children with support and input that turned out right every single time. Mother knows best! She was a long-time, dedicated employee of the Bartlesville School System, starting in dining services at Ranch Heights Elementary and completing her 20-plus career in 1991 in the dining services administration office. Upon retirement, she treated her family to her favorite trip, a memorable two weeks in California. Virginia grew up on a Kansas farm and rode horses to school (without dad's permission), chased chickens and honed her great cooking skills. Like many mothers of the 60s, Virginia hosted bridge club, attended Tupperware parties, juggled a family's needs with one car (imagine that) and wasn't sure about the Beatles. Virginia and Melvin have been long-time, active members of Good Shepherd Church and were blessed by many friendships and ministries, particularly during the loss of their youngest son. In addition to her three children, Virginia was a loving Grandma to three and Great-Grandma to four. She loved to treat her grandkids to trips and they marveled at the amount of time she could spend in the kitchen and shopping for bargains. She was preceded in death by her parents, son Douglas Ryan, a sister and a brother. Survivors include husband Melvin, who remained by her side when she required assisted living; son Gary Shutt and his wife of Stillwater, Okla.; daughter Cathy Shutt of Broken Arrow, Okla.; seven grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and brother Daniel Rowe of Papillon, Neb. Virginia and Melvin and their family wish to thank the entire staff of Brookdale South and Comforting Hands Hospice for their care and compassion, as well as Rev. Dale Scott for his loving ministry. Visitation will be Tuesday December 29, from 9am-5pm with the family present from 3pm-5pm. A home-going celebration will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2015, at Good Shepherd Church with Rev. Dale Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Arnold Moore & Neekamp funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial gift to Comforting Hands Hospice, 2450 SE Washington Blvd., Suite A, Bartlesville, Okla., 74006, phone 918-331-0003.
