October 23, 1926 — August 23, 2016

Luginbuel Funeral Home - Vinita - 918-256-5555...... Waldo James "Barney" Barnes passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2016. He was 89 years old. Barney was born on the outskirts of Afton on October 23, 1926. One day later, his future wife, Oleta Brewster, was born in Cleora. Barney and Oleta met on the playground of Cleora School when they were 12 years old. Barney found a child's ring on the playground, offered it to Oleta, and asked her to be his girlfriend. When asked what her answer was, he said, "You know, she never did give me a straight answer." They married on September 16, 1947. Together, they had four children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He served in the Army in WWII and earned the Victory medal and Army of Occupation medal. He was honorably discharged on December 18, 1946. Barney loved St. Louis Cardinals baseball and spending time with his little dog, Deuce. An amateur historian, Barney traveled the tri-state area to meet family members and document the Barnes and Jackson family histories. He loved talking about Afton history and telling stories to make people laugh. He is preceded in death by his wife, Oleta; his parents, Isaac and Lola Barnes; brothers Herschel, Kenneth, Donald, and infants Bobby Gene and Chester; sisters Imogene Thulin, Colleen Patton, and infant Thelma Barnes; his son Terry Brewster "Bruce" Barnes; and granddaughter Brandi Barnes Carroll. He is survived by his children and spouses, Ronnie Barnes of Bluejacket; Rebecca "Becky" and Bill Davis, Afton; and Greg "Bub" Barnes, Afton; his grandchildren and spouses, Jimbo Barnes and Amanda Lemmon, Afton; Jan and Steven Williams, Afton; Gabe Barnes, Austin; Jake Barnes, Afton; Alicia Sharp and Jim Dickinson, Stillwater; and Craig and Susan Barnes, Tulsa; and his great-grandchildren, Ashley Carroll, David Carroll, Lane Carroll, Rachele Williams, Ryan Williams, Starr Lemmon, Kenley Carroll, all of Afton, and Lennon Barnes, Tulsa.
