Walter Sires 86 of Bartlesville, passed away on Friday, December 11, 2009 at the Sterling House. Walter Clinton Sires was born on June 14, 1923 in Bartlesville to Amos and Minnie (Reynolds) Sires. He attended elementary, middle and high school in Bartlesville graduating from College High. Walter entered the United States Army on January 21, 1943. On April 25, 1943 he was qualified as a sharpshooter using the M1 rifle. On June 7, 1944 he was with the first troop out on Normandy Beach during D-Day. Walter received a Campaign Medal with 5 Bronze Stares and Bronze Arrow-Head, a Purple Hear, and a Bronze Star Medal during his service to his country. Walter was honorably discharged on October 24, 1945 at which time he returned to Bartlesville and began his career with Phillips Petroleum Company. He started running the printing press and with consistent advancements after 42 years he was an Executive Manager of Graphic Arts and Reproduction at the time of his retirement. Walter married Pauline Maberry on September 21, 1946 in Independence, Kansas. Two words would describe Walter: a hunter and a fisherman. He loved to hunt and fish so much that Pauline and Walter had a cabin at Toledo Bend Lake for over 20 years. Walter would many times joke that the only reason he worked was so he could go hunting and fishing. He was a big family man; he loved Pauline, his two children, his two grandchildren, and his great grandson. Walter was a devoted member of his church an in his memory the Sires Family would like for memorial contributions to be made to the First Baptist Church of Dewey, 300 E. 10th Street, Dewey, OK 74027. He is survived by one son Jim and his wife Phillis Sires of Tulsa, one daughter Patty and her husband Don Henderson of Fairview, Texas, one grandson Kurth Sires of Tulsa, one granddaughter Alicia and her husband Brandon Sprowl of Fort Worth, Texas, one great grandson Trenton Sprowl, one sister Rosetta Estes of Bartlesville, two sister-in-laws Judy Sires of Bartlesville and Virginia Mabery of Bartlesville and numerous friends. Walter was preceded in death by his loving wife Pauline Sires of 62 years, his parents Amos and Minnie Sires and one brother Mannford Sires. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the First Baptist Church in Dewey with Pastor Mark Wright officiating. Final committal rites will be accorded Mr. Sires in the Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville. The American Legiona Post 105 will conduct military honors for Walter and Jim Snively, George Lorenz, Ron Sires, Ben Divin, Craig Gordiner, and Sean Estes will honor Walter by carrying his casket.
