Wendell Terrell Phillips, Jr. 80 year-old lifetime Vinita resident, died Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at his home in Vinita. He was born October 24, 1930 in Murphy (Mayes County) Oklahoma to Wendell T. Phillips, Sr. and Elizabeth (Davis) Phillips. Wendell served his country in the United States Marines from 1952 - 1954. He had worked for Yellow Freight for many years before going to work for the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority, where he retired from in 1998. Wendell was a member United Missionary Baptist Church in Vinita. He loved the farm life; horses, rodeo, gardening and working with the tractor were his favorite things. The family includes: his wife Louise of the home; his children, Theresa Downing, Jarrett Phillips, Donald Phillips, Ricky Phillips, Patti Benson and Michael Phillips all of Vinita; sisters, Yvonne Phillips of Wichita, Carlene Stokes of Denver, Helen Taylor of Los Angeles, Okla Mae Hicks of Vinita, Betty Twitty, Jean Spires of Wichita, Patricia Fox of Los Angeles, Martha Phillips of Midwest City; brothers, Charles Phillips of Vinita, Clarence Phillips of Springfield, MO; fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives survive. The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Cowboy Junction, with Rev. Farris Downing officiating. Interment will be at the Shady Grove Cemetery near Chelsea. Casket bearers will be, Phillip Barrett, Larry and Houston Landrum, Kenneth Downing, Bobby Hicks, and Roger Tyler. Honorary bearers will be, Harry Guthrie, Jim Bullard, Phil Carroll, Willard Beisley, Bobby Downing, Phil Carroll, and Jim Bresnehen. Online condolences may be made at www.honoringmemories.com.
