William Newton Crofford, Jr. 63 year old Strang resident, died Thursday September 2, 2010 at the Mayes County Medical Center in Pryor. He was born February 15, 1947 in Tulsa to William Newton Crofford, Sr. and Clara Sarah (Collins) Crofford. He married Joanna Phillips on June 7, 1969 in Tulsa at the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. William attended Skiatook High School, later was drafted in the United States Army. While serving in the Army he was wounded in Vietnam receiving several purple hearts, silver star, and a congressional medal of honor. William was a member of the American Legion, DAV, Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Vinita. He enjoyed his grandchildren, working on cars, western movies, fishing and horses. William had taught CCD at St. Marks and was formerly a 4H leader for many years. The family includes: his wife Joanna of the home, six children, Joanna Whitmire and husband David of Fairland, Sarah Rankhorn and husband Jonathan of Pryor, Jeanette Morgans of Claremore, William Newton Crofford, III and wife Tracy of Vinita, Mary F. Crofford of Strang, Matthew M. Crofford and wife Lacey of Phoenix, AZ; brothers and sisters, Patricia Wedeking of Muskogee, Bob Crofford of Skiatook, Sue Dismang of Muskogee, Melody Poe of Muskogee, Dub Crofford of Georgia, Rhonda Eby of Adair; sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The funeral for William Newton Crofford, Jr. will be held Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the Luginbuel South Grand Lake Chapel in Langley with Father Alex Kennedy officiating. Interment will follow at the Spavinaw-Strang Cemetery in Spavinaw. Arrangements are by the Luginbuel South Grand Lake Funeral Home of Langley.
