Wilma Sloan

Ketchum, OK - Wilma Millikan Sloan, 95, died Thursday, October 4, 2007 at Claremore Nursing Home, Claremore, Oklahoma. Wilma was born December 18, 1911 near Ketchum, Oklahoma to John Sherman Millikan and Gertrude Lee (Huffman) Millikan. She graduated from Big Cabin High School and then furthered her education at NEO A&M at Miami, Oklahoma. Wilma married Samuel Floyd Sloan on March 25, 1934 at Vinita, Oklahoma. Mr. Sloan preceded his wife in death February 26, 1996. Wilma was an electroencephalographer, performing EEGs for Dr. Herman Flanagan, a neurologist at Eastern State Hospital. She was employed at Eastern State from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s. She left her family farm near Ketchum and moved to Claremore, to be near her granddaughter, in 1998. Wilma was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church; a member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Abraham Coryell Chapter, Vinita and a member of Daughters of American Colonists, Vinita Chapter. During her life, she was active in the community, serving on the Military School Board and Mayes County Election Board. Wilma loved to square dance and was a member of the Claremore Twirlers. She quilted, grew a fabulous vegetable garden and raised quarter-horses and Appaloosas. Survivors are her daughter, Roberta Sloan Carter of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a granddaughter, Susan Gebhart and her husband, Richard of Claremore; and two great-granddaughters, Erica Boyer and her husband, Matt, who reside at the family farm near Ketchum and Roxane Gebhart of Claremore. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Euna Hughes and Veda Lacy and by a grandson, Kelly Carter in 1983. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m, Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at Otterbein United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Bradford, officiating. Interment will be in Military Cemetery under the direction of Luginbuel South Grand Lake Funeral Home, Langley. Friends may call at the funeral home, Sunday, 1-8 p.m. and Monday 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. The family suggests that those who wish may donate to the Otterbein United Methodist Church Building Fund.
