Grove, Ok. - Zoe Alice Simpson Major died Wednesday, October 8, 2008 at Grove Nursing Center after a battle with bone cancer. She was born on June 26, 1918 in Hockerville, Kansas to Elmer Joe and Chlora Viola (Anderson) Simpson. Zoe graduated from Barnsdall High in 1936, then attended a year of college at Tonkawa OK Junior College. Zoe was a life long volunteer. She was active in Girl Scouts from her youth. Later she served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughter, Linda, during the 1940's. She was a Cub Scout Den mother for her son, Joe, who was a Cub Scout in the 1960's. Zoe was a chairwoman for the Girl Scouts in Picayune, Mississippi in the 1970's where she was an important individual in the desegregation of the Girl Scouts in South Mississippi. She was also involved in Homemakers. After she moved to Grove in 1983 Zoe was president of AARP, a member of the American Legion and active in church work. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Ray Monson Simpson and her husband Justin Claude Major. Zoe is survived by her daughter Linda Major Clark of Georgetown TX: grandchildren, Karen Clark Ristine of San Diego, CA. Todd Aaron Clark of Austin TX; great grand children Kaitlyn Clark and Haleigh Clark of Austin TX; and Ryan A. Ristine of San Diego, CA. She is also survived by her son Joe William Major of Mandeville, LA and his wife Mina; grand children Rebecca Elizabeth Whiting of Columbia S.C. and Elissa Lyn Lester of Covington LA; great grand children Autumn Harms and Gracie Whiting of Columbia S.C. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2008 at Elk River Baptist Church in Grove with Brother Mark Hester officiating.
